He served in the military in Denmark. For a time he was a member of the King's elite guard, who rode horseback alongside the king's carriage.

Converted to the L.D.S. "Mormon" Church in Denmark, he emigrated to Utah in 1859, with his sister. The passenger list for the ship "William Tapscott", May 13, 1859, shows: Nils J. Awgard (Aagard), age 24, and Ellen K. Awgard (Aagard), age 21. Niels filled a mission to the United States in 1876 -1877.

AN ENDURING LEGACY, vol. 11, "Early Mormon Settlements", the section on Levan, says that "during the year 1875 the United Order was set in operation (in Levan), with 133 persons participating. By 1878 a total of 273 members had joined. BISHOP AAGARD was a strong advocate of this order of living and worked hard to keep it alive. It was disbanded, however, because the people were not ready to live under this order." (note: under "United Order" principles, Church members own all property and belongings in common as they did in the New Testament book of Acts).

Niels Aagard was an L.D.S. Bishop (local church leader) in Levan, Juab County, Utah, from July 1, 1877 (when the Levan Branch was first organized into a Ward), until his death on February 4, 1892. Niels's first wife Sorene (Serina, Serena) was unable to have children, so at the urging of Church leaders, he married a second (plural) wife, Bolette Maria Rasmussen, a young immigrant from Denmark, on 29 Dec 1877. Boletta was required to give up her first two children to Niels's first wife, Sorena, to raise. Boletta's firstborn child died, so she was told that one didn't count. Her second child, Mary, and third child, Niels, were given to Serena.

Niels Jensen Aagard served time in the Utah State Penitentiary for cohabitation (having more than one wife at the same time), after the United States Congress passed laws forbidding this practice. Many leading men in the LDS Church were similarly imprisoned around this time, and it was regarded as a badge of honor. The Mormons felt they were being unjustly persecuted for living the principles of their religion. Forced to choose between his wives, Niels chose the first wife, Sorene. His second wife, Bolette, was sent to Cache Valley in the northern part of Utah, and had to support herself and her children, with the help of charity from others. She later returned to Levan.
